Bruno Bettelheim, an internationally known psychoanalyst and author, was the most famous proponent of psychogenesis during the 1950s and 1960s. He began this piece by defending that theory as therapeutically optimistic, at least in comparison to biogenesis. Austrian-born, Bettelheim came to the United States in 1939.

Bruno Bettelheim was born in Vienna, Austria, on Aug. 28, 1903. After the Nazi takeover of Austria in 1938, he was placed in German concentration camps at Dachau and Buchenwald because he was Jewish.
